Activities before my departure abroad
What was your approach in organising the placement?:
Nejprve jsem oslovil několik zahraničních laboratoří a zjistil, jestli by byla někde možnost absolvovat měsíční stáž. To bylo úspěšné a dokonce jsem si mohl vybrat z několika laboratoří. Následně jsem se obrátil na naši univerzitu ohledně možného financování stáže a domluvili jsme finální termín stáže.

Laboratoř jsem kontaktoval cca 10 týdnů před zahájením stáže.

Ve dnech 6. 10. – 9. 11. 2019 jsem se zúčastnil pracovní stáže v Birminghamu v laboratoři institutu Cancer and Genomic Sciences vedené prof. Stankovic. Laboratoř je zaměřená na výzkum chronické lymfocytární leukémie (CLL), mechanizmy opravy DNA a využití defektů v drahách oprav DNA pro cílenou terapii. Stáž mi přinesla možnost pracovat v prestižní laboratoři, naučit se nové metodiky a účastnit se setkání výzkumné skupiny. Během stáže jsem se věnoval miniprojektu, který byl zaměřen na testování kombinace inhibice proteinů ATR a CHK1. V laboratoři jsem měl příležitost naučit se metodiku fluorescenční mikroskopie k detekci poškození DNA, metodu DNA fiber analysis pro analýzu postupu replikační vidlice, comet assay detekující poškození DNA a stimulaci primárních buněk CLL. Kromě toho jsem analyzoval viabilitu buněk a buněčný cyklus pomocí průtokové cytometrie, detekoval hladinu vybraných proteinů metodou western blotu. Své výsledky jsem dvakrát prezentoval na setkání výzkumné skupiny. Kromě toho jsem naučil jednoho PhD studenta metodiku western blotu s malou aparaturou od firmy Bio Rad.
Práce odpovídala domluveným podmínkám i zcela přesně mému oboru studia.
Po zaučení jsem v laboratoři pracoval samostatně. Pracovní doba byla 40 hodin týdně.

Ubytování jsem si zajistil sám prostřednictvím Airbnb s předstihem asi 2 týdny před stáží.

Equipment, internet connection, what to bring:
K dispozici bylo připojení na internet, lednička, mikrovlnná trouba, koupelna, záchod. Kuchyně nebyla k dispozici.

What are the rough costs of groceries (compare with Czech prices):
Ve velkých supermarketech byla cena potravin srovnatelná nebo jen nepatrně vyšší. V restauracích byla cena několikanásobně vyšší. V nemocniční nebo univerzitní jídelně byla cena asi 2x vyšší.

Transport to location of placement:
Letecky a pak vlakem a autobusem.

Letenky např. s předstihem přes web kiwi.cz nebo skyscanner.cz.

What are the local transport options (public transport, cycling, on foot, rough prices):
Ubytování jsem měl blízko univerzity, tak jsem chodil do práce pěšky asi 20 min jedna cesta.
Autobus stál asi 75 Kč/cesta. Vlak 80 Kč zpáteční cesta do centra.
Na delší vzdálenosti je autobus asi 2x levnější než vlak.

Pojištění přes Masarykovu univerzitu jako zaměstnanec.

Ne.

Ne.

Tips for recreation:
Prohlídka samotného města Birminghamu, dále jsou v dojezdové vzdálenosti cca 1,5 h města Liverpool, Manchester a Londýn, která určitě také stojí za návštěvu. Doporučuji na delší vzdálenosti cestovat autobusem, který stojí asi 2x méně než vlak.
